Folkwang & Folkwang

The Museum Folkwang and the Folkwang University of the Arts do not just bear the same name—both institutions cooperate in manifold ways. We share a passion for photography.

Since 2021, Peter Gorschlüter, the director of Museum Folkwang, has been teaching as an honorary professor of Art and the Public at Folkwang University of the Arts, offering a course each semester open to students from our department.

Peter Konarzewski and Heike Koenitz have been working as photo conservators at the Museum Folkwang since 2021 and also teach a seminar on the restoration and preservation of photographic materials. These courses are open to all bachelor students (always in the winter term) and master students (always in the summer semester) studying the three photography programs at Folkwang University.

At the beginning of each year, the Museum Folkwang mounts the exhibit »Photography Masters« with works by our M.A. Photography Studies and Practice students.

Furthermore, both institutions founded the Essen Center for Photography with the Krupp Historical Archive and the Ruhr Museum. This alliance shall strengthen the work for photography through joint academic events, exhibitions, and publications.
