The publication, edited by Anne Breimaier and Matthias Gründig, documents the first European solo presentation of conceptual photography by US-American artist and art critic Hollis Frampton (1936–1984) at UG im Folkwang, Essen, in 2018. Known primarily as a filmmaker, two years before his passing Frampton created »ADSVMVS ABSVMVS, in memory of Hollis William Frampton, Sr., 1913–1980, abest«. The work consists of 14 color photographs and an exhibition brochure. It is addressed by the texts in this volume as a collection of individual images and an installation, situating »ADSVMVS ABSVMVS« within the history and theory of art, photography and exhibition making. The book features reproductions of Frampton’s eleventh edition of »ADSVMVS ABSVMVS« as well as a re-design of his exhibition brochure and installation views in Essen. The exhibition and the catalog resulted from a collaboration between Freie Universität Berlin and Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen.
