What strategies were employed to make photographs from socialist countries more compelling to both domestic and international audiences? How did photographs circulate within the socialist bloc and traverse the Iron Curtain? What mechanisms underpinned the cooperation and collaboration among socialist state photo agencies? This presentation examines these questions through the lens of a largely overlooked 1958 meeting of the heads of press photo and stock image agencies from eleven socialist countries.

Although largely based on the Chinese language primary materials, this study attempts to illuminate how an imagined community was formed through collaborations against an allegedly daunting and menacing presence of non-Socialist media. The affective reach of socialist photography was not only the pursuit of individual photographers but also the product of a transnational infrastructure of persuasion.
