For the second time since 2022, we have the great pleasure of presenting an exhibition at the DZ BANK Art Foundation in Frankfurt am Main. Under the title »n+1. Mehr als ein Bild« (»n+1. More Than One Image«), students from the M.A. Photography Studies and Research program — the master’s program in the theory and history of photography at the Folkwang University of the Arts — developed this exhibition during the winter semester 2025/2026 together with Christina Leber, Artistic Director of the DZ BANK Art Foundation, and Steffen Siegel.
Stacked, arranged, layered: seriality appears in contemporary art in a remarkable variety of forms. The formula »n+1« describes the multiplicity of individual elements that artists repeatedly combine into a single work of art. Many of these multipart works exist in different versions, or artists continue to expand them with additional elements, allowing each combination to produce distinct effects. As a result, serial artworks generate a wide spectrum of formal relationships — as a single object composed of multiple elements, or as diptychs, series, cycles, clusters, or archives. Sequential artworks also engage with one another on a conceptual level. Depending on the combinations artists create, new connections and interpretations continually emerge.
The exhibition features works by Heba Y. Amin, Sara Cwynar, Katarína Dubovská, Dörte Eißfeldt, Jan Paul Evers, Philipp Goldbach, David Hockney, Sven Johne, Jürgen Klauke, Peter Miller, Loredana Nemes, Barbara Proschak, Adrian Sauer, Helmut Schweizer, Roman Signer, and Sophie Thun.
The curatorial work behind the exhibition included selecting the artworks, developing their conceptual arrangement within the exhibition space of the DZ BANK Art Foundation, producing the accompanying catalogue, and contributing to the public program. Fenna Akkermann, Greta Aufermann, Jan Borreck, Franziska Derksen, Jakob Fleischer, Hugo Höfler, Alexandre Kurek, Marie Laforge, Louisa Lahr, Annabella McNair, Selma Mierl, Pablo Plum, Charlotte Anna Rathmann, Annika Reinhard, Lara Sariaydin, Felix Schmale, Hannah Schuh, Ellena Stelzer, Paula Stilke, and Alexander Tirel all contributed to the project.
The opening reception took place on Tuesday, 24 February 2026. Ulrike Brouzi, Member of the Board of Managing Directors of DZ BANK AG, together with Steffen Siegel, Christina Leber, Franziska Derksen, and Felix Schmale, spoke at the opening.
The exhibition will remain on view until 23 May 2026 at the DZ BANK Art Foundation at Platz der Republik in Frankfurt am Main.
