From May 22 to June 5, 2026, Galerie 52 presents the exhibition »Helmut Schweizer: Handlungen. Actions«.
Between 1970 and 1976, the artist Helmut Schweizer (*1946) developed his series »Handlungen (Actions),« which ultimately grew to comprise more than one hundred three-part sequences. Each depicts an ordinary chain of actions — cracking the top off an egg, for example, or hammering a nail into a wall. In their apparent simplicity, these image sequences invite viewers to reflect in a fundamental way on our relationship to the world: how we shape it and alter it through our actions.
What is particularly striking is that Schweizer was already thinking intensively in the 1970s about the negative consequences of such interventions. This ecological concern has profoundly shaped his artistic practice ever since. In 1992, he participated in documenta IX. During the years in which the series was created, excerpts from »Handlungen« were exhibited in numerous institutions, not only in Germany but also in other European countries, and more recently in North America and Asia.
Five decades after its completion, the time has come to present the series publicly for the first time in its full scope. The exhibition at Galerie 52 offers this opportunity. It is preceded by extensive archival research conducted since 2023 by Luis Lucyga and Steffen Siegel together with the artist. They have reviewed, digitized, and processed the material in Schweizer’s archive, enabling the exhibition to offer an entirely new perspective on »Handlungen« and inviting its rediscovery.
Accompanying the exhibition, curated by Luis Lucyga and Steffen Siegel, an extensive artist’s book has been published by Spector Books Leipzig.
The exhibition opens on Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 6 pm. The artist will be present.
Everyone interested — both within and beyond the Folkwang University of the Arts — is warmly invited to attend. No registration is required.
