Steffen Siegel has been a professor of the theory and history of photography at Folkwang University of the Arts since 2015. He is heading the M.A. program Photography Studies and Research and the doctoral studies on the theory and history of photography.
During the academic year 2011/2012, he was a research fellow at the International Research Center Morphomata, Center for Advanced Study at Cologne University. In 2019/2020, he was an Ailsa Mellon Bruce Senior Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) of the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.
For his research, he received the Research Prize for the History of Photography from the German Society for Photography (DGPh) in 2014 and the International Humanities Research Prize in 2017, awarded by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, the Verwertungsgesellschaft Wort, the German Foreign Office and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
He is a member of the Advisory Boards for the scholarly journals Photographies and 21: Inquiries into Art, History, and the Visual. Furthermore, he is a member of the board of the Dokumentationszentrums für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg (DDK).
